Art Matters

When I first came to Ann Arbor in the early 80’s I didn’t know anybody. That was the great thing about the Art Center – you didn’t have to know anybody to become a part of it.  It was public, it was accessible.  It was a great way to get to know other people in Ann Arbor who cared about keeping the arts alive.  Now, I have a grandson who’s taken classes there.

The Ann Arbor Art Center’s
Artini Martini Crawl 2011

And the Winner Is…

Ann Arbor, MI – February 28, 2011 – The winner of the 2011 Artini Martini Crawl, a fundraising event for the Ann Arbor Art Center, is the Ally Bar.  It’s carefully crafted creation for the evening, the cucumber melon artini, was selected the most artful martini by the 400+ participants.  The third annual, sold out Artini Martini Crawl was held on Friday, February 18th.  In addition to the Ally Bar, 2011’s other Artini Artists were Bab’s Underground Lounge, The Black Pearl, Café Felix, Café Habana, Jolly Pumpkin, Mélange and Vinology.

Highlights of the evening included Vinology’s “Mexatini” which featured chorizo infused vodka, red bell pepper juice and a spiced corn tortilla rim.  Bab’s Underground Lounge served a chilled, artfully layered martini with a sugar rim named the “Flirtini.” Two-time defending champ, The Black Pearl, crafted a caramel puff hot chocolate martini which included vodka steeped in vanilla beans with a  marshmallow garnish from Kilwin’s, their community partner for the second year.

“The atmosphere was terrific! Even when we were three guests deep at the bar, everyone was having a great time. I think they were enjoying the theatre behind our cocktail and its presentation,” said Paul Drennan, General Manager at the Alley Bar.  “This event is all about supporting the Art Center, an important part of our community and our vision is to be a part of that community.  It was a great opportunity for us to display our number one passion, exceptional hand crafted cocktails.  We want to have fun and develop wonderful and timeless drinks.”

Proceeds from Artini benefit the Ann Arbor Art Center a non-profit organization dedicated to engaging the community in the education, exhibition and exploration of the visual arts.  Offering studio art classes, workshops, exhibitions, art camps and more, the Art Center is the place where creativity and community meet.  For more information please visit www.annarborartcenter.org.
