Explore the art of wheel throwing in this basic and continuing class for 9-12 year olds. Learn best practices and techniques of working with clay on the wheel and discover the science and beauty of glazing. In this fun class for beginners and continuing students ages 6-8, learn a variety of handbuilding skills such as coiling, pinching, slab construction, wedging, and sculpting. Create imaginative projects ranging from sculptural forms to fantastical collaborations. All materials for this class are covered by the lab fee.

In this class, both parents and children will experience the magic of creating clay forms on the wheel. Parents and children will  work on their own pottery wheels while learning together and sharing the wonderfully tactile adventure of creating functional and decorative objects out of clay! Instructions will be included on the basics of wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, surface decorating, and glazing. Come with a playful spirit and wear clothes you do not mind getting messy! All materials for class are covered by lab fee. Price includes one adult and one child.

Careful observation is the foundation to inquiry. In this introductory week, campers will participate in a variety of games and activities that challenge them to slow down and look carefully. They will learn the fundamentals of drawing and design, and will discover surprising new ways to see the world around them. Artists introduced include Leonardo da Vinci, Georges Seurat, Rene Magritte, Bridget Riley, Cindy Sherman, and Duane Hanson.

Squish it, pinch it, join it, bend it – students will explore the expressive nature of clay while learning the vocabulary of 3D design. What can be expressed through texture and form? Discover how choices regarding abstraction, size, or narrative dictate how we perceive sculptural objects. Artists introduced include Jun Kaneko, Robert Arneson, and Richard Notkin. *Each day of clay camp starts with a morning session of Clay on the Wheel

In the spirit of Independence Day, this week is about encouraging our campers to stick with it! Extended painting and building projects will give campers the time to make their work the best it can be, helping them develop patience and a bit of grit. Artists and architects introduced include Michelangelo, Thomas Jefferson, and Do Ho Suh. 

Practice, practice, practice! In this 3 day session students will take a glimpse into the life of a studio potter. They will spend the entire day wheel throwing and building the skills for centering, forming and trimming, and will finish pieces with slips and decorative techniques. This extended time on the wheel is ideal for beginners or continuing students who want to sharpen their abilities.

What is clay? And how does heat transform it? This week, campers will examine clay through the observant eye of a scientist and will discover the mysteries of ceramics. Experimentation will reveal connections to geology and chemistry. *Each day of clay camp starts with a morning session of Clay on the Wheel

The best artists and innovators learn to take risks! This week campers will experiment with wild materials and tools to push their ideas and imaginations to the limit.  Projects will investigate risk taking and different aspects of the design process, from conception to execution to reflection. Artists and architects introduced include Marcel Duchamp, Maya Lin, Jackson Pollock, and the Impressionists.

Balancing form and function will be the challenge this week. Students will conceptualize, produce, and reflect on the objects they create and use. They will design or redesign objects to fit specific needs while being mindful of aesthetics. Artists and designers introduced include Eva Zeisel, Hella Jongerius and the modern pottery studio Heath Ceramics. *Each day of clay camp starts with a morning session of Clay on the Wheel

Anything is possible in this week of camp! Brainstorming new, bold, and even wacky ideas is the goal with a variety of 3-D and drawing projects that let campers develop a small idea into a brilliant vision. Artists and architects introduced include Cai Guo-Qiang, Cory Arcangel, Subodh Gupta, and Antoni Gaudi. 

Build it up, carve it out, paint it on! Campers will use clay as canvas in this study of decorating techniques. From ancient sgraffito to stamping and printing, campers will broaden their ability to communicate through clay while creating textures, patterns, and imagery. *Each day of clay camp starts with a morning session of Clay on the Wheel

Great ideas can be expressed in so many ways! This week campers will explore how symbols, text, design, form, color, and movement can communicate different ideas. They’ll explore sculpture, mixed media, and even performance and street art to investigate and express their thoughts and opinions. Together we’ll learn about human expression from cave paintings to contemporary art.  Artists introduced also include Cy Twombly, Mark Rothko, Bruce Nauman, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Barbara Kruger, and Banksy.

Discover new ways of looking and understanding the world through the eyes of others. A variety of special printmaking and painting projects will help build empathy and compassion for different peoples and places. Artists introduced include Jacob Lawrence, Frida Kahlo, Dorthea Lange, Ai Weiwei, and Claude Monet. 

Surviving ceramic objects play an important role in the archeological record of humanity. This week, campers will study the ancient history of ceramic objects and decipher hidden knowledge about these cultures. How did they create these objects and for what purpose? Students will then use this knowledge to create their own ceramic piece that will give future generations insight into our time. *Each day of clay camp starts with a morning session of Clay on the Wheel

Hand built clay construction will be the challenge this week. Building structures, creating connections, and tackling timing are important to create successful hand built pieces. Projects will encourage the combination of building techniques such as slab assembly, coil building, and pinch pots. Campers will also learn about how the strength of clay is utilized to create bullet proof vests, traditional adobe homes, and fired clay houses. *Each day of clay camp starts with a morning session of Clay on the Wheel

A variety of design challenges will keep campers on their toes! This week will feature a mix of drawing, sculpture, and 3-D projects that will spark solutions and build the confidence to tackle any adventure. Artists and designers introduced include Charles Eames, Alexander Calder, and Christo and Jeanne Claude.

This week is all about taking inspiration to new heights! Surprises, laughter and amazement will fill our studios as campers get to see and do a variety of art-based experiments, find out the secrets to special works of art, and discover how the unexpected can give their art new inspiration. Many fun surprises are in store for this week.  Artists introduced include Wassily Kandinsky, Shomei Tomatsu, Claus Oldenburg, and the Surrealists.

Just how far can we push the medium of clay? This week we\\\\\\\'ll throw out the rule book! Campers will brainstorm and experiment on a quest to develop their own building techniques. We will take inspiration from the \"Mad Potter of Biloxi\", George Ohr. Beware: results may be silly or even ridiculous. *Each day of clay camp starts with a morning session of Clay on the Wheel

Working as a team can lead to brilliant ideas. This week campers will use individual drawing, painting, mosaic, and sculpture projects as a springboard for collaboration. Team building and sharing will be emphasized on fun, large-scale group projects. Artists introduced include Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

Working as a team can lead to brilliant ideas. This week campers will conceptualize and construct group projects including sculptures and murals. For this final week of camp, instructors will choose the top projects of Summer Creativity Clay Camp 2013 measured by our Student Enthusiasm Meter. *Each day of clay camp starts with a morning session of Clay on the Wheel

Making the first mark on a blank canvas is the hardest step. This final week will encourage campers to be confident, assertive makers and to face down their fears of making the “wrong” decisions. Drawing, printmaking, and mixed media projects will provide chances to build confidence, and campers will even get the chance to curate their own exhibition. Artists introduced include Michelangelo, Jackson Pollock, Morris Louis, the Dadaists, and Surrealists. 

In this class for story lovers, discover how to create and illustrate your own adventure. Explore comic book art, cartooning, anime, pop-up books and illustration, as well as bookmaking techniques and book cover design! The fundamentals of drawing are taught with each lesson. Students must be 8 years old by first day of class. All materials are covered by the lab fee.

Design your own comics in this class for 9-12 year olds. Learn how to use four common tools in cartooning (shape, size, line, and color) to create characters readers will believe in, worlds they will love to explore, and stories they will never forget.

Throughout the course, play with various formats such as mini-comics, serialized comics, and graphic novels, and try your hand at using many of the materials used by comics professionals. The best artists and architects have a strong foundation in drawing  skills. In this class for 9-12 year olds, learn how to see carefully and translate observations onto paper.  Investigate and understand contour lines, value, perspective, proportion, and composition.  Students will have the opportunity to use various drawing materials including graphite, charcoal, and conte. All materials are covered by the lab fee.

Dream-up and create your own stuffed animal or monster in this workshop for both adults and families. Using felt, glue, and quick whip stitches, we\\\'ll help you make a stuffed creation of your own design. No prior sewing experience necessary, all materials will be provided. Workshop fee covers one monster per family.

Travel around the world in this multi-media class for 6-8 year olds. Each week students will visit a different culture and create a work inspired by traditional art forms.  From Indonesian Shadow Puppets to Japanese fish prints, and from Chinese paper fans to festive Mexican sugar skulls, join in as creativity and culture meet! All materials included.

This workshop introduces block printing to parents and children that uses simple materials and easy methods to produce beautiful prints. For ages 4 and up. All materials will be provided, tuition includes one parent and one child.

Teens, take the wheel. In this class, students will explore all aspects of pottery including throwing on the wheel and basic sculpture techniques. Students will be given an introduction to the entire process, including forming, glazing, and firing. Each  session will include a demonstration of techniques during the first part of the class, while the remaining time will be for practice and individual instruction. This is an excellent class for beginning and returning students, as you can never have enough practice on the wheel!  The lab fee includes 25 pounds of stoneware clay and all firing, slips and glazes.  New students need to purchase a basic pottery tool kit. These kits are available for $20 at the first class. Open Studio Time is not included in Teen Courses.

Get to know the fashion industry and the creative process of fashion design in this innovative class for teens.  Develop individual illustration styles by experimenting with a variety of drawing media and approaches.  Projects will introduce elements of design such as line, shape, color and texture coupled with brainstorming and inspiration tactics.  At the end of the class the student will review their work and put together a final portfolio. All materials are included in the lab fee.

Explore styles of illustration from Doré to anime! Starting with a poem, story or quote we will investigate a variety of drawing and painting styles inspired by some of the greatest illustrators and graphic artists of all time. These techniques will broaden students’ horizons and help them find their own unique visual voice. This class is perfect for students with an interest in creative writing who want to translate their ideas into images. All materials included.

Have you ever wondered how good painters make a rose look so real you could pick it, or an apple so round and shiny you want to eat it? In this four day workshop we’ll learn to see and paint every nuance of color, light, shadow, reflection and form. This course will prepare you for mastering more complex subjects and will serve as an introduction to the luscious medium of oil paint. All materials included.

Discover how to design, tile, and grout pottery mosaics for display at home or in the garden. A variety of colorful glazed pieces will be provided and you are welcome to bring in any chinaware you would like to include in your artworks. If you\\\'re a potter, have fun smashing up your own failed glazeware to incorporate into your design. Bring an old towel and we will supply the rest.

This course will focus primarily on techniques of handbuilding with clay. Students will learn to make plates, cups, bowls, boxes, vases, rattles and more using primarily slab as well as coil and pinch methods. In this introductory class, learn how to conceptualize, design, and produce your own decorative tiles. Discussion and demonstration includes design, working with wet clay, slab rolling and cutting techniques, surface decoration and glazing. Explore a variety of techniques including patterning, carved relief, molds, texturing and stamps in a supportive and relaxing environment.This course is for students of all skill levels.

Material Scientist Dave Weber will share his knowledge of ceramic materials and glaze formulation. His experience in industrial ceramics at Kohler and as a glaze expert at Motawi Tile Works has given him an extensive repertoire of glaze knowledge to guide this class through the complexities of glaze making and testing.

Through centuries of history the pinch pot has continued to be reimagined and utilized as a basic clay construction technique. This 4 day workshop will focus on this most simple and ancient form of pottery and inspire advanced form development and decoration. Techniques covered will include faceting, carving, patterning, smoothing techniques and Alex’s personal clay marbling method. Students will produce cups, bowls and vases. Lab fee includes 12.5 pounds of stoneware clay, and all firing, slips, and glazes.

Develop your drawing skills with a live model in this class for both beginning and advanced students. Group demonstrations will be given on a weekly basis, and tailored individual instruction will support each student\'s needs. Explore gesture line and shape building techniques, the muscular and skeletal systems, shading methods, and understand proportional measurements of the body and face. Group and individual critiques will be given in each class to help students achieve their best work. Please bring a sketch pad and pencil to the first class. A materials list will be distributed and discussed at that time.

8 Mondays: April 8, 15, 22, 29, May 6, 13, 20, June 3 (No class 5/27)

Work independently from nude models in a large, well-lit studio space. Drop in on Fridays with your painting or drawing supplies and work at your own pace. No instruction is provided, but the Art Center will provide easels. Arrive before the scheduled class and pay the drop-in rate of $14 per session, or register online for all 8 sessions at a rate of $10 per session and secure your spot.

This class will be structured to accommodate both the beginning and advanced level student. Develop and strengthen fundamental drawing skills, including one and two-point perspective, shading techniques, and how to visually represent light and depth. We will work from life to explore architecture, still objects, and organic forms. Weekly group demonstrations combined with one-on-one instruction and regular critiques will help every student improve his or her drawing ability in a positive atmosphere. Materials will be discussed at the first class.

See the beauty of color pencil in a new light. In this class for students of all skill levels, learn how to mix color pencil through layering and blending. Draw from collaged photography, create abstract compositions and sumptuous still life arrangements, and discover new sources for inspiration and content. Develop a visual and verbal grasp of color theory while simultaneously pursuing an expressive personal style. Please bring a set of Prismacolor Premier Color Pencils (24 pencils), a graphite pencil, and a sketchbook to the first class meeting.

Discover the potential of soft pastels in this class for beginning and continuing students. Learn layering and mixing techniques to explore value, intensity, and color relationships. Continue perfecting your drawings skills in this extension course for our popular Drawing in Pubs class! We\'re continuing the course at Grizzly Peak for former students from the spring semester. Exercises include drawing glassware, people, and investigating the play of light and shadow. The first class will meet at Grizzly Peak. Please bring your sketchbook and preferred drawing materials.

Make it a date at UMMA in this drawing workshop designed for couples.  Partners of all levels of drawing experience are invited to see each other more closely and learn how to sketch facial features. Teaching artist Erika Villarreal Bunce will also share the history of couple portraiture and diptychs. Participants will produce several large sketches and one set of small, finished drawings of each other. All materials included, price includes two people. Must register at least 3 days in advance. This class meets in the multi-purpose room in UMMA\'s Frankel wing.

Influenced by the beautiful photography of Brett Weston and other works in the collection, this drawing and painting workshop is an investigation of the landscape. Each session will include a gallery experience and working outside, weather permitting, to explore the definition of landscape and to work from direct observation.  This class focuses on traditional landscape drawing and painting in the media of your choice.  Be sure to bring your walking shoes, a pop-up easel or blanket to sit on, as well as any drawing/painting materials that you are interested in working with (charcoal or pastels are ideal). A large sketchpad will be provided. This class meets at the Universitiy of Michigan Museum of Art (in the multi-purpose room located in the Frankel Wing). Must register at least 3 days in advance

We\'re taking a cue from the Impressionists who sketched in Paris cafes with this social drawing class held at Grizzly Peak Brewing Company. Sip on a drink and make new friends while you learn the basics of drawing, including shading, texture, perspective, and form. Learn how to draw the portrait from life in this course for beginners. Students will become familiar with anatomy, muscles of expression, lighting, shading, and developing personal style. Group and individual instruction will be given with emphasis on building observational skills. Classes will include an art vocabulary, which will be used throughout the course. Positive critiques will be given to encourage students to make their drawings be the best they can be. Materials will be discussed on the first day of class.

This four week workshop will explore techniques for creating color and texture on fabric surfaces, whether as part of works of art or to put your own creative embellishment on personal or home items.  Using embroidery and hand stitching methods, appliqué and other techniques, we will work from drawings and photos to beautifully transform a variety of fabric surfaces. All basic materials covered by the lab fee.

4 Sundays: May 12, 19, June 2, 9 (no class 5/26)

Learn the basics of crewel embroidery, a free form hand stitch technique with a modern aesthetic. In this casual but informative workshop, we\\\'ll discuss materials and introduce stitches over the best cup of coffee in town at RoosRoast. Using the fun and soggy process of wet-felting and kool-aid dying, we\'ll create colorful, soft baubles and string them into bracelets and necklaces. No prior experience necessary, and all materials will be provided. 

Open Studio is for students who have taken beginning jewelry at the Art Center and would like to work independently. All equipment and benches are open on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This class is for students with some experience with watercolor painting who want to grow in their mastery of the medium and further develop their individual style. The class will include instructor guided projects as well as self directed work, supported by class discussions and individualized instruction.  Students will be able to expand their horizons in watercolor through trying unconventional and experimental techniques.  These activities will alternate with sessions in which students can work on their own projects. Please bring watercolor supplies and some examples of your work to the first class.

This class is specifically designed for intermediate to advanced level student artists who have previous experience drawing and painting from life, but wish to deepen their basis of studio inquiry and material mastery through structured demonstrations and concentrated one-on-one instruction. While there are no shortcuts for developing beautiful figurative paintings, there are however, a number of simple, observation-based material processes that will transform the way you think about light, color, and the human form. Discover the fresh and transparent medium of watercolor in this class for beginners. In a fun and relaxed atmosphere, students will learn the basics about pigments and papers, color and value, and glazes and washes.  Each session will feature a series of exercises that build skills and confidence, and students will learn a variety of techniques. Classes held at the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living, 3941 Research Park Dr., AA, 48108.

This class is made possible through a partnership with the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living (CIL), and all materials are included. The CIL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the success of children, youth and adults with disabilities at home, at school, at work and in the community. The class is open to all, and hopes to connect a broad range of people interested in art.

Learn to beautifully capture the plants, flowers, and landscape in one of Ann Arbor’s premier gardens this spring. Work in the medium of your choice for six weeks on location at Matthaei Botanical Gardens.  Emphasis is placed on learning to simplify your compositions while organizing form, value, and color. Discover tips to strengthen your work all while enjoying the abundance of color. Class meets indoors in case of inclement weather. Bring your preferred medium, supplies, and a portable easel. Please note that all day parking at the Botanical Gardens is $5, so we\\\'ve reduced the cost of the class to cover your out of pocket expense.

This course is an introduction to the basic tools and techniques of the medium of watercolor and will include topics such as color, texture and composition.  Classes will include informal lectures and demonstrations, practice techniques, in class painting time and critiques.  Students will be encouraged to be self expressive while experimenting with various techniques and working from still life.  Students will also have the option to work on self directed projects. An initial supply list will be sent out before the start of this class, and additional materials will be discussed on the first day.

8 Saturdays: July 13, 27, August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, September 7 (no class 7/ 20 due to Art Fair)

Using the landscape as a jumping off point, this class will look at the landscape, compositional issues, and visual languages that venture into abstraction.  Students will develop their own vocabulary of mark making along with the tools of non-representational painting traditions.  While this class will focus primarily on the use of painting with oils, some drawing, collage, and mixed media will also be explored. We will look at artistic traditions and art historical reference points to better understand the abstract elements found in the landscape, and students will make paintings and preparatory drawings from sites both chosen by them as well as the instructor. Demonstrations will be given on a weekly basis along with tailored individual instruction, and   group and individual critiques will help students achieve a better understanding and more nuanced approach to discussing their work. This class is for students who have a basic understanding of both drawing and painting. Please see the attached supply list. Additional supplies will be discussed in class.

Bring your walking shoes for this class on the move. For each session, we will first meet at the Art Center and make a short walk to a new location in and around the edge of downtown Ann Arbor to paint and/or draw the urban environment. Explore aerial perspective, nature and architecture, and investigate new spaces with your brush.  Students will have the freedom to experiment with and choose different mediums to work with. Please come prepared with an easel or something else to work on, as well as the drawing and painting media of your choice. 

6 Thursdays: July 25, August 1, 8, 22, 29, September 5 (No class 8/15)

In this six week course students will explore a variety of painting media such as oil and acrylic and learn how to incorporate photography and collage to produce interesting abstract works. Students will also become familiar with contemporary artists and relevant movements in art history. Group and individual instruction will be given with emphasis on building personal style. Classes will include an art vocabulary, which will be used throughout the course. Positive critiques will be given to encourage students to make their paintings be the best they can be. Materials will be discussed in class.

6 Tuesdays: July 30, August 6, 13, 20, 27, September 3

Inspired by the exhibition Isamu Noguchi / Qi Baishi / Beijing 1930, this brush painting workshop gives participants of all skill levels a chance to investigate the beauty of ink. Explore gestural drawing and painting by working directly from a clothed model, and experiment using large format paper laid on the floor. All materials will be provided. This class meets at the Universitiy of Michigan Museum of Art (in the multi-purpose room located in the Frankel Wing). Must register at least 3 days in advance

This workshop introduces the joys of rubber block carving.  Rubber blocks are easy and satisfying to carve and produce beautiful prints on many materials.  Cards will be provided but feel free to bring your own items to print on such as t-shirts, canvas bags, home textiles, journal covers, and more. This is a great introduction to block printing that provides foundational skills used in linoleum & wood block printing as well. All materials will be provided.

Fractals are beautiful forms created by repeating, self-similar shapes at varying magnifications. This workshop introduces basic information on fractals, how to identify them, and will show examples of work by the Surrealists, many of whom used them in their work.  Students will then experiment with the fractal process known as decalcomania, where monoprints are created with various types of paper using different pulling techniques. Colored pencils, paint and erasers will be used to enhance the prints that the students make. All materials will be provided.

Join Amy Farnum, the Art Center\'s Gallery Shop Director and Nathan Rice, Exhibitions Manager for a lecture and Q&A that will help prepare you for approaching galleries and shops to sell or exhibit your artwork. Topics will include  presenting a consistent body of work, photography, web presence, developing a brand, and communication etiquette. This workshop is a 1 1/2 hours long lecture with a 1/2 hour Q&A. Artists can also schedule a 15 minute portfolio review session that will followr the workshop (be sure to email Amy at afarnum@annarborartcenter.org after purchasing the porfolio review option).
