SUMMARY:PlayLab: Exploring Block Printing
DESCRIPTION:In this engaging and hands-on free art workshop for kids and caregivers in Ann Arbor\, students will explore the elements of art and principles of design while completing a custom tote bag and postcard using block-printing techniques! \n\n\n\nDuring this session\, children and caregivers will collaborate to design their own custom tote using pre-cut stamps made by featured Spotlight Gallery artists Gyona Rice and DaJaniere Rice. Participants will be guided step-by-step through the printing process\, including selecting and mixing ink colors and printing their design onto fabric and paper. \n\n\n\nThis is a free event\, but as space is limited\, we ask that you register to reserve your spot for a child aged 8-12 and their caregiver. This registration includes instructions for two people. Please complete only one registration per two people\, in your child's name. Once spots are filled\, you will be put on a waitlist. SUMMARY:Catching Fireflies: Quilt Collage Drop In
DESCRIPTION:Led by artists and sisters DaJaniere and Gyona Rice\, participants will create a small\, improvisational\, quilt-inspired collage using fabric scraps\, patterned paper\, and mixed-media materials. Inspired by family traditions\, childhood memories\, and the storytelling found in quilts\, participants will piece together colors\, textures\, and shapes to create a unique composition that reflects a place\, person\, or memory that feels like home. No sewing experience is required. The focus is on creative exploration\, storytelling\, and finding beauty in imperfection. Each participant will leave with their own completed mini quilt collage (approximately 5x7 or 8x8 inches) mounted on cardstock or canvas panel\, ready to frame or display. Along the way\, participants will be encouraged to reflect on the people\, traditions\, and spaces that have shaped them. This is a drop-in workshop. Participants can join at any time during the scheduled event and work at their own pace. Materials will be provided on a first-come\, first-served basis\, but attendees are welcome to bring additional materials! \n\n\n\nOpen to all ages. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. Also featured is landscape painter and woodworker Wendy Bauer Braun\, whose stunning work compliments the beauty of the backyard glass art garden that Nisson has been adding to and curating for years. Any chance to check out this breathtaking vista in Ann Arbor is well worth taking\, so we hope that you make it out. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Larry: \n\n\n\nLarry Nisson has been working artistically with glass for over thirty years. He started as a stained glass artist and then became involved in glass blowing and glass sculpting. Many of his pieces are on display around Washtenaw County in local businesses and homes. On top of Nisson’s work with the Art in Public Program\, he is also one of the founders of Westside Art Hop! \n\n\n\nAbout Wendy: \n\n\n\nIn addition to Nisson’s glass art\, the garden art show will also feature works by local artist Wendy Bauer-Braun landscape painter and woodworker\, whose passion for the outdoors inspires her work. Her paintings capture the calm shifts within daily landscapes painted on wood panels and complemented by her handmade frames. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC) for an artist talk with sculptor Christopher Fennell on Wednesday\, October 14\, at 6:00 PM. \n\n\n\nFennell will share insights into his broader public art practice\, which transforms discarded and found objects into dynamic\, large-scale sculptures\, and discuss the fabrication process behind his latest installation\, “Three Ladder Fire.” \n\n\n\nCreated for Ann Arbor’s new Fire Station 4 using decommissioned ladders from the Ann Arbor Fire Department\, the 24-foot tall sculpture twists retired equipment into a sculpted flame\, honoring both the history of the fire service and the building's status as Michigan's first Net-Zero fire station. \n\n\n\nABOUT CHRISTOPHER FENNELL \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWEBSITE | INSTAGRAM \n\n\n\n\n“Sculpture is a visual language. Using recycled materials is not only a powerful image about our choices\, but also connects the audience to the artwork through their own personal experiences with those materials.” \n\n\n\n\nArtist Christopher Fennell builds structural skeletons from discarded or found objects. The materials he chooses have been cast out or devalued by society and so his selections are based on the kind of message or impact each piece should convey. This is how a demolished barn can become a wave\, broken bicycles transform into a tornado\, and downed trees can be given a second life as a pillar of fire. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris’s creative inspiration comes from two places: engineering and art. His background in engineering provides a singular understanding of how the materials can be formed\, shaped and connected into a structure. His vision as an artist and his sense of humor bring the parts together in a form that is not only pleasing\, but often thought-provoking and dynamic\, challenging the viewer to look past the recognizable shape to see how everything is connected. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany of Chris’s pieces encourage people to participate\, to place themselves inside or to pass underneath and through\, seeing the form from several angles. Each piece is site-specific\, taking advantage of the surrounding landscape and architecture and often incorporating regional or cultural hallmarks.
