Summer 2022 Ceramics Independent Studio – At Home

Summer 2022 Ceramics Independent Studio – At Home, has a prerequisite of having taken a minimum of 2 ceramics classes at the Ann Arbor Art Center. If you have not taken ceramics classes at the A2AC before this class option is not available. Please see our other ceramics class offerings that might be a better fit.

Ceramics Independent Studio – At Home, provides a unique opportunity to make work at home and bring what you have created into the Ann Arbor Art Center for processing. Ceramics Independent Studio – At Home, is designed for those who have experience working with clay and understand ALL aspects of the ceramics process, making thru glazing. No instruction is provided. This class is not intended for beginning students. Your registration is for one adult 18 years of age or older. Ceramics Independent Studio – At Home does not include ANY use of Ann Arbor Art Center equipment.

You will not have access to –
Pottery Wheels Slab Roller
Bats Bat Holders
Wedging Tables Molds or Studio Tools

Your Ceramics Independent Studio – At Home registration fee includes: All firing costs and glazing supplies related to processing your work. Clay must be purchased separately. You can do this through our gallery shop and it is available to purchase during A2AC business hours.

We offer both in store and curbside pick-up. Clay options include: Rovin Ceramics You BetCha! Mix(white), Laguna B-Mix 5 w/grog(white), Rovin Ceramics RO-95 Porcelain(white), Rovin Ceramics RO-82M Terracotta(red) and Laguna #60 Speckled(tan). The Ann Arbor Art Center will ONLY process pieces made from the clay purchased through the Art Center. The Ann Arbor Art Center Ceramics Studio is a “Closed Loop System”. Outside clays and unknown materials cannot be processed at our facility. The Ceramics Studio staff reserves the right to reject pieces that could cause damage to other objects or equipment during the firing process.

Important Dates –
First day to pick up clay – Monday, June 27, 2022
First day to drop off work – Saturday, July 2, 2022

Drop Off –
Students can drop off work during regular Art Center business hours and during Independent Studio hours. Please, do not enter the Studio if a class is in session. You can always access the kiln room through the back hallway. Pieces being dropped off should be 100% bone dry and ready to be loaded into the kiln. Our staff will do their best to bisque fire your pieces as quickly as possible. General turn-around time for pieces to be ready to glaze is 7-10 days. Students will be asked to limit their time in the studio when dropping off.

Glazing –
Students need to have a clear understanding of the glazing process and are welcome to attend any of the Independent Studio In-Person times to glaze their pieces.

Students must provide their own basic pottery tools and clay used in the studio must be purchased at the Art Center or in the online shop. Independent Studio Hours include the use of all equipment and glaze materials.


Covid-19 Policy for Summer Term: Vaccinations and masks are encouraged, but not required for students attending summer term classes. The A2AC reserves the right to update this policy at any time during the term in response to changing circumstances.
