The Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival is a nonprofit organization dedicated to putting comics in the hands of kids and teens again, and opening up a world of imagination and creative exploration.

On Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16, A2CAF will be holding several FREE hands-on workshops on the 3rd floor of the Ann Arbor Art Center! Take advantage of a unique opportunity to meet real comic book artists and learn from the pros! All ages welcome and all materials will be provided!

Space is limited- all workshops are on a first-come, first serve basis. Details are listed below:

Saturday, June 15

12:00pm-12:30pm

Quick Draw with Bruno Hohn & James Anderson | All Ages

Imagine an episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway? starring a group of quick-thinking cartoonists, and you’ll begin to get the picture of Quick Draw. It’s improvisational cartooning with plenty of audience participation, brought to you with courage and cheer by our guest artists.

12:30-1:30pm

Coloring Comics Digitally, with Aaron Polk | Teens & Adults

Learn the process professional colorists use to color comics and graphic novels, and get some hands-on experience with the tools they use! Aaron Polk (colorist on Dog ManHawking), will guide you through an exploration of one of the cooler jobs in comics. Seating is limited!

Sing a Song, Draw Along | All Ages

Join cartoonist Patrick Lay and musician James Michael Meadows and draw along while we listen to a new music by James, played live! In between songs, we will talk about what we drew and how we connect music to images. At the end, Patrick will show his new illustrations based on the same music for a children’s book coming out this spring.

Make a Mini-Comic, with Jerzy Drozd | All Ages

Join cartoonist Jerzy Drozd for an exciting exploration in how cartoonists use shape, size, line, and color to write with images. At the end of this gameful workshop you’ll make your very own mini-comic!

3:30pm-4:30pm

Author Spotlight on Wendy and Richard Pini | Teens & Adults

Ever thought about self-publishing? Considering making an epic fantasy series of comics? Learn from two of the masters of the Elfquest series in an informal panel on their 40-year journey in comics publishing. Moderated by Zack Giallongo.

6:00pm – 8:00pm 

A2CAF After Party/Drink & Draw | All Ages 

What’s one to do after an exciting day of celebrating comics at A2CAF? How about having a snack, a beverage, and draw some comics at the A2CAF Drink & Draw at the Ann Arbor Art Center! Cartoonists and readers can join forces to create a great big giant jam comic.
Light refreshments will be provided, so even if you don’t feel like drawing you can just hang out!

What’s more fun than toys? How about Drawing toys? Join cartoonist Lee Cherolis (Little Guardians) for a fun exploration using toys as live models for drawing.
