Summer Art Camps 2020

Looking for a fun and exciting experience for your children? These art camps are designed to cultivate cognitive development through hands-on art projects that leverage collaboration, experimentation, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

SUMMER CREATIVITY CAMPS: AGES 5-12

Week 1: Crazy Critters | June 22 - June 26

Week 1: Crazy Critters | June 22 - June 26

Let your imagination run wild as we explore the animal kingdom and use the forms, patterns, colors, and textures found in creatures of all kinds as the basis for a series of art projects. Campers will: • Design a spectacular stuffed animal • Sculpt an amazing animal mask • Draw an imaginative, surrealist drawing of a very strange animal

Week 2: Movie Madness | June 29 - July 3

Week 2: Movie Madness | June 29 - July 3

Lights, camera, action! Who hasn’t marveled at the characters, costumes, props, and set designs found in movies?! This week will truly be an award-winning production as we: • Work together to create a stop-motion movie • Make art projects inspired by a variety of movies and movie characters • Develop an elaborate set-design concept for a favorite movie

Week 3: Light it Up! | July 6 – July 10

Week 3: Light it Up! | July 6 – July 10

We’re positively glowing with excitement as we experiment with light! Learn how to use and manipulate natural light in artwork, create the illusion of light in drawings, add LED lights to a project, and more! Campers will: • Create artwork that will glow under blacklights • Use LED lights in a drawing or sculpture • Make a faux stained-glass light-catcher • Learn to draw an object to appear as if it is glowing or lit up

Week 4: Tiny Wonders | July 13 – July 17

Week 4: Tiny Wonders | July 13 – July 17

Join us as we take BIG ideas and transform them into a series of tiny wonders and mini masterpieces! Campers will learn all about scale and proportion as they: • Create a tiny pet and accessories that fit in a pocket-sized box • Sculpt mini polymer clay charms or magnets • Work together to make a small, hidden world somewhere for people to discover • Make a drawing that zooms in on something very small *Due to the lack of parking during the Ann Arbor Art Fair, there will not be a Camper Art Show on Friday. Camper pick-up will take place at the normal time that day.

Add a little flavor to your artwork! Whether it’s still life paintings, pop art prints, or giant Claes Oldenburg sculptures, food has always been one of the most popular subjects in art. Campers will: • Use food as inspiration for a colorful painting or print • Make a larger-than-life sculpture of a piece of food • Draw a kawaii character that resembles a favorite food

Let the games begin! Not only will we make artwork inspired by the Olympics, but we will also test our ingenuity and problem-solving skills by completing a series of amazing art challenges. Campers will: • Design a crazy trophy for an imaginary event • Make artwork that is the largest, most colorful, silliest, or coolest interactive project ever seen • Transform a camp instructor into an incredible human sculpture

An action-packed week awaits as we learn the secrets to creating amazing comics and designing dynamic characters. All will be revealed as campers: • Learn the basics of character design and create a model sheet like the pros do, depicting how the character appears from various angles with different facial expressions. • Make a spectacular mini-comic book • Create a cool bobble-head character

So many fish in the sea and so much art to be made! Climb aboard as we set sail and explore the depths of our creativity. Discover the amazing creatures that lurk just below the surface. Campers will: • Make a deep-sea creature that glows under a black light • Draw and sculpt a series of exotic fish, crustaceans, sea monsters, and more • Illustrate a detailed map of their own secret island

Do you have a sense of ADVENTURE? Are you an explorer at heart? Discover art from around the world and through the ages as we travel to the ends of the earth and back again! Campers will: • Learn about and create artwork from every continent • Use printmaking techniques to reproduce geometric patterns used around the world • Find a lost, legendary city and work together to recreate it

On your mark, get set, GO! Get your game on as we stretch our creativity, challenge ourselves to think outside-the-box, and find inspiration in games of all kinds! This week is sure to be a win as campers: • Design and create their own games • Construct real-life Mario Karts • Make functional art from repurposed game boards and game pieces

Are you wild about animals? Learn how to incorporate animal forms, characteristics, and patterns into your sculptures. Campers will have a roarin’ good time as they: • Make a pencil holder in the shape of an animal • Create an exotic bird-shaped planter • Transform a thrown form into their favorite animal

Week 2: Throwing on the Wheel & Movie Madness | June 29 – July 3

Week 2: Throwing on the Wheel & Movie Madness | June 29 – July 3

This week is sure to be a blockbuster as we create sculptures influenced by the characters and imagery found in our all-time favorite flicks. Campers will: • Construct a classic popcorn box using hard-slab construction techniques • Applique their favorite Disney or Pixar character onto a clay tile • Make a droid like those found in Wall-E or Star Wars

Week 3: Throwing on the Wheel & Light it Up | July 6 – July 10

Learn how clay can interact with light in mesmerizing ways. Make sculptures that glow when a light is placed inside them and construct forms with cut-out decorative designs. Campers will: • Sculpt a monster tea light holder with eyes that will glow • Create a luminary that will radiate beautiful patterns of light • Make an architectural structure with cut-out designs

Week 4: Throwing on the Wheel & Tiny Wonders | July 13 - July 17

We’re more than just a little excited to experiment with scale and proportion to create a series of terrific, tiny treasures! This will be no small feat as campers: • Add a tiny surprise to a thrown vessel, which the user will discover • Work together to construct an incredible miniature world • Sculpt a large version of something that is microscopically small. Your sculpture will still be small, but technically giant in comparison. *Due to the lack of parking during the Ann Arbor Art Fair, there will not be a Camper Art Show on Friday. Camper pick-up will take place at the normal time that day.

Pottery is often created for the purpose of serving or containing food. What better way to celebrate that purpose than to use food as our inspiration for a series of projects! Campers will: • Construct a wedge-shaped box that resembles a delicious slice of pie or cake • Design a jar in the shape of a favorite food • Make a chip-and-dip tray by combining a thrown form with a handbuilt form

Prepare for a series of epic challenges as we create our very own CLAY version of the Olympics. Dig in, get your hands dirty, and reach for the stars as we: • Sculpt a trophy to commemorate a silly & unusual feat • Make a special medal and decorate it using sgraffito techniques • Work in groups to make the tallest coil pot EVER (This will be for fun and skill-building. It will not be fired.)

Give your sculptures plenty of personality this week as we explore the art of character design. Campers will try their hand at making fantastic, dynamic characters and more as they: • Create a superhero bobble-head figure • Sculpt a clay bust using both coil and pinch techniques • Make a sculpture that features an exaggerated facial expression

Sometimes inspiration is just around the corner, or in this case, under the sea! Dive in as we create artwork inspired by the patterns, textures, shapes found in sea creatures. Campers will: • Create an exotic undersea creature with tentacles • Sculpt a tropical fish using soft-slab techniques • Use a slump mold to make a fish-shaped platter, embellished with wild textures and bold colors

Week 9: Throwing on the Wheel & Clay Adventures | August 17 – August 21

Buckle up as we travel to far off lands to discover how different cultures around the world and through the ages have used pottery and sculpture to create functional and decorative art. Campers will: • Embellish a thrown piece with geometric patterns found on pottery items around the world • Create 3 tiles using sgraffito, applique, and slip trailing methods to create different traditional designs • Learn the names and forms of a variety of Greek vessels

We’re up to our ears in fun this week! Give it your all as we rev up for a series of fun challenges and projects that stretch our creativity to the max. Campers will: • Sculpt a larger-than-life piece from their favorite game. • Make a storage box for game cards, dice, or game pieces, embellished with game designs • Play a series of games and will be given challenges throughout the week that add exciting twists to art projects and push their creativity and problem-solving skills to the limit
