Ann Arbor Art Center Purchases 115 W. Liberty
to Expand Programs and Exhibits
Ann Arbor, Mich., December 18, 2017 – The Ann Arbor Art Center has purchased 115 W. Liberty, which is adjacent to its existing location, to expand its programs and exhibits.
“Ann Arbor is an arts-focused, innovative town, and the Art Center is proud to serve as an integral part of this creative community for over 100 years,” said Marie Klopf, executive director of the Art Center. “The demand for visual art experiences has outgrown our space. This expansion will provide additional arts programming, exhibitions, artist talks, art parties and increased community space.” Klopf also noted that the Art Center is considering including an artist-in-residency program.
The 117 and 115 W. Liberty buildings were designed by the Walker brothers in 1886 and 1893, respectively. C. Walker and Brother, also known as the Ann Arbor Carriage Works, closed in 1921. In 1989 both buildings were designated as part of the Ann Arbor Main Street Historic District. The Art Center relocated to 117 W. Liberty in 1975.
A $4 million capital campaign is underway to finance the purchase and renovation of the contiguous space. Just over $1 million has been raised to date. The Art Center closed on the acquisition on December 15. Construction financing is being led by Ann Arbor State Bank and will include participation from Bank of Ann Arbor.
