About The Artist
Nicolei Buendia Gupit (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist from Los Angeles, California who is currently based in East Lansing, Michigan. After completing her BA in Studio Art from Williams College, she taught English abroad at K-12 public and private schools in Micronesia, South Korea, and Taiwan. Her creative research touches upon issues related to the American Dream, US colonization in the Philippines, and her cultural identity as a second-generation Filipina American. Her current projects investigate her interest in immigration and diaspora and the pressures that climate change puts on people who live in high-risk regions. Her recent works have been shown at The Painting Center in New York City, NY Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minneapolis, MN, and Elsewhere Studios in Paonia, CO.
Artist Statement
Pamilya is an iterative, audiovisual art project incorporating voice recordings, video projections, and resin and paper-pulp casts. Each iteration of Pamilya proposes different sensory experiences, configurations, and thematic concerns.
Creative Practice
As a current MFA candidate at Michigan State University, my studio space has been a semi-private space shared with other graduates. I have been able to develop a conceptually rigorous, multi-layered, and materially focused art practice using my studio space here.
