The Michigan League of Handweavers (MLH) was founded in 1959 to promote handweaving. Handweaving is a fabric production technique that involves weaving threads together on a handloom without the use of electricity. It is one of the oldest crafts in human history, dating back to the Neolithic era around 12,000 years. The League welcomes anyone interested in handweaving or the many related aspects of fiber art and craft including spinning, felting, knitting, crochet, knotting, quilting, dyeing, embroidery, surface design, garment design and construction, bead-weaving, dollmaking, papermaking and basketry. The League provides opportunities for members to come together to learn and to exchange ideas by sponsoring lectures, workshops and exhibits. As a non-profit, educational organization, we also provide seed money for events around the state.
Michigan League of Handweavers, 23rd Biennial Fiber Show is made possible thanks to the generosity of The Ann Arbor Fiber Guild, Black Sheep Weavers Fiber Guild, Cross Borders Weavers, Dharma Trading, Eastside Weavers Guild, Greater Lansing Weavers Guild, Jackson Handweavers Guild, Joyce & Bob LaVasseur, DuckaDilly, Lakeshore Fiber Arts Guild, Midland Fiber Arts Guild, Northland Weavers & Fiber Arts Guild, Spun, Weavers Circle, Woodland Weavers and Spinners, Yarn Barn of Kansas, Weavers Guild of Kalamazoo
About The Juror
Cathryn Amidei is a contemporary textile artist whose handwoven tapestries merge traditional craft with digital technology, creating complex and dimensional surfaces. She earned an MFA in Fibers from Eastern Michigan University, where she taught for 15 years, and has supported and taught weavers for over two decades with expertise in the TC-2 jacquard loom. Amidei is Director of the Digital Weaving Lab at Praxis Fiber Workshop in Cleveland, Ohio. Her practice explores themes of connection, motion, and interaction, often reflecting on natural spaces and the body as landscape. Her work has been exhibited nationally and is held in private collections.
