HOW WE HOLD BY QUINN FAYLOR

Exhibition On-view: June 12 - August 26, 2026

Opening Reception

Friday, June 12, 2026, from 6-8 pm

Quinn Faylor's practice is rooted in observing relationships—between bodies, objects, environments, and the systems that hold them together. They begin by studying these relationships as they appear around them: how forms lean, balance, overlap, and rely on one another. These observations are first explored through sketchbook studies, where they work intuitively with shape, rhythm, and repetition. From there, compositions are developed through painting and printmaking, and often expanded into three-dimensional sculptural works or immersive environments.

Quinn thinks of their work as a form of world-building. Each composition functions like a small ecosystem—constructed through color, structure, and spatial logic—where no single element exists in isolation. Nature serves as both a model and a collaborator in this process. Quinn finds interest in how natural systems demonstrate cooperation, adaptation, and interdependence, offering alternatives to rigid hierarchies or fixed forms.

Through abstraction, Quinn aims to distill these relationships into visual languages that feel alive and relational. Shapes become stand-ins for bodies or forces; surfaces hold traces of movement and touch. As ideas shift between drawing, print, paint, and form, the work records transformation rather than resolution.

Across all mediums, Quinn's work explores themes of queer embodiment, care, and collective evolution—inviting viewers into spaces that encourage curiosity, balance, and attentiveness to how we exist with one another and the environments we inhabit.

Quinn Faylor is a queer non-binary multidisciplinary artist based in Detroit, Michigan. Working across painting, printmaking, installation, and sculpture, their practice is characterized by a vibrant color palette, playful compositions, and a strong sense of movement. Through abstraction, Faylor explores relationships as creative endeavors, investigating themes of balance, trust, and transformation. Their work is an exploration of the body’s relationship to joy and the ways we can stretch, grow, and care for one another across boundaries.

Originally from Petoskey, Michigan, Faylor earned a Bachelor of Arts and Ideas in the Humanities from the University of Michigan in 2016 before relocating to Detroit to establish their practice. They are a 2024 recipient of the Emerging Artist Fellowship from PLAYGROUND DETROIT and have completed residencies with City Walls (Detroit, MI), the Glen Arbor Arts Center (Glen Arbor, MI), and the Salt Spring Arts Council (Salt Spring Island, BC).

Beyond their studio work, Faylor has created numerous public and private murals across Michigan, as well as in San Francisco and Tokyo.
