Jan Bogart has her piece, Sanctuary, currently on display in our 117 Gallery. Check it out from now until July 14.
Jan Bogart completed a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kansas. Jan relocated to Michigan where her new profession allowed her to complete a B.F.A. in Sculpture at Eastern Michigan University while working as an Engineer for General Motors. Jan currently works at Michigan Medicine managing Capital Construction projects, while continuing her art making with Ypsi Alloy Studios. She happily resides in Ann Arbor, MI with her wife and teenage daughter.
Bogart uses found objects, often architectural elements, furniture or other domestic items, to create work expressing an experience or idea. These are often autobiographical but may be related to as part of the universal human experience. The piece “Sanctuary” connects her family’s experience seeking shelter with extended family where infants slept in cribs made from dresser drawers. The wall pieces are inspired by the drawer pull hardware and by the history of 1000 ACE English sanctuary church door knockers which granted a person sanctuary once they had been touched.
