Straight Up Featured Artist: Chris Sammons

Straight Up, our monthly art pop-up is back! We’re showcasing local artist, Chris Sammons. Grab a drink, groove to live music, and soak up the local art scene at Alley Bar on Monday, April 23 from 7PM-10PM.

Chris “Dokebi” Sammons is an illustrator and graphic designer currently based in Ann Arbor. Although born in Queens, he spent most of his life bouncing around the world.

The moniker Dokebi, a mischievous Korean troll-like creature, was assigned by his grandmother to best describe his work. Dokebi relies on using both detailed patterns and bold line work to create a variety of characters, habitats, and iconography.

“My artwork is a compilation of who I am today, drawing on my family’s culture, where I have lived and traveled. That combined with having been heavily influenced by comic books, graffiti, and Saturday morning cartoons, had brought about the development of my ever growing style. My work features a variety of monsters, animals and imaginary friends linked together by recurring characters and themes. Masks and tattoos are by far the my most common of these themes. I’m interested in how people present themselves to the rest of the world and I explore that through my own characters.”
